Discussion Post for Celestina, Erin, Ryan, Kakas, Carol, and SAM

According to Words Their Way, the purpose of Word Study is to teach "students to examine words to discover the regularities, patterns, and conventions of English orthography needed to read and spell" as well as to increase "specific knowledge of words --the spelling and meaning of individual words" (p.4). With that being said, how can teachers reinforce word study to students who already have knowledge of words through their unique sociocultural perspective who struggle with reading?

In the case of Jacques, who does not participate in class writing assignments but shows that he is fluent in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through his work with his congregation, Ms. Bryant and previous teachers believed Jacques' school literacy abilities were non-existing, which caused teachers to fail him. However, Jacques clearly demonstrated his ability in reading, writing, and speaking through being a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. How can we as educators diminish this misconception in ability between our perspectives of students and our students' true abilities?
